Bioenergy – What are the possibilities and trade-offs?

Location: Studio Malmö, Nordenskiöldsgatan 24 Malmö
Date: 24th May 2018
Time: 18:30 to 20:30

In connection to the Nordic Clean Energy Week in Malmö and the International Energy Ministerial Meeting in Malmö and Copenhagen, Lund University and Climate-KIC will host a panel discussion with leading researchers and other experts on the topic of bioenergy.

The debate will be on the possibilities for transformation into a fossil free society using more biomass for energy and the interest conflicts that may raise/arise from this transition. Generally, we will deal with the potential trade-offs between GHG mitigation with usage of bioenergy and other sustainability goals.

The debate will focus on the following questions:
In the Swedish context, what are the potential for substituting fossil fuels with bioenergy and what will be the consequences?
Will increased usage of forest residuals lead to biodiversity losses in Swedish forests?
What other tradeoffs can appear?
Broadening the discussion, what is the international potential for bioenergy to replace fossil fuel and what are the trade-offs?
- Is there enough land available for both food and energy production?
- Will increased pressure on land and an increased demand for biomass become a threat to biodiversity and lead to deforestation? What areas are at risk to be severely affected?
- Will small-scale farmer rights be respected in an international race for bioenergy?

Keynote speakers:
- Lena Ek, Chair of the Board Södra, former environmental minister of Sweden
- Prof. Henrik Smith, Director Centre for Environmental and Climate Research (CEC), Lund University
- Gustaf Egnell, Department of Forest Ecology and Management; Forest-based Bioenergy Unit, The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences
- Prof. Lennart Olsson, LUCSUS (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies)
- Prof. Semida Silveira, Head of Energy and Climate Studies Group, KTH - Bharadwaj Kummamuru, Executive Director, World Bioenergy Organisation
