Climate change is wickedly complicated. It is interconnected with other massive global problems such as food security, water scarcity, biodiversity depletion and environmental degradation. This means that it is impossible to solve climate change with traditional approaches to innovation which tend to focus on a single, or just a few aspects of the problem. Instead, analysis of challenges and creation of solutions need to address entire systems.
Sustainability, climate, and low carbon economy innovators, professionals and practitioners, and those who enable and support them, including project managers, business development managers, and CSR managers.
- Explain the key difference between system innovation and traditional ways of innovating
- Describe the system innovation framework
- Summarise the system innovation process
- Distinguish between different tools used in system innovation
- Begin to experiment with and apply the canvas tools for analysing and facilitating system innovation challenges
This online course has been created and provided by EIT Climate-KIC (learning design, development and hosting) and Javier de Vicente Lopez and Cristian Matti (content and subject matter expertise).

System Innovation has two key elements:
- A structured course: this is comprised of interactive learning nuggets, downloadable guides and a quiz. By completing each of these – including achieving the required score in the quiz – you will be awarded a certificate.
- Toolkits of canvases: you can explore these and download them to start experimenting how to use them for analysing and facilitating system innovation.
The first part – the structured course – will provide you with a foundation for system innovation. You’ll be introduced to a framework, a ‘loopy’ process, and a range of tools – canvases that can be used at various stages of the process. NB: This first part – the course – is mandatory for participants on some Climate-KIC programmes; if you are on such a programme please check requirements with your organiser.
The others parts – the toolkits – are canvases for you to use as and when you need to. You do not need to explore all of them in one go – in fact, this might prove a bit overwhelming. Instead, we encourage you to download those which seem most relevant for you at the moment and try them out. Come back to the others whenever you want to.
When you take the quiz, ten questions will be assembled randomly from a pool of questions. You need to achieve a score of 70% or more to ‘pass’.
Yes – you can re-take the quiz whenever you want. You may be presented with new questions and also some you’ve seen already – but not necessarily in the same order as before.
In the course element of System Innovation the learning nuggets explain the purpose of each of the canvases and have step-by-step examples of the canvases being used in practice. Download the canvases that you think could be most useful to you and experiment with them – feel free to adapt the canvases to suit your own needs. Come back to the toolkits and download other canvases whenever you want to.
Yes – feel free to adapt them to suit your own needs.
Your progress is tracked automatically – this is shown on the menu against each item. For the learning nuggets you will see whether you have not started, started, or finished each one. Opening a guide or canvas will register this as ‘completed’.
Check with your organiser what is expected of you. For example, you may be required to complete the first part – the course, including the quiz – before attending your first face-to-face session (as you complete each element this will be shown on your dashboard). You will probably not be required to open and download each and every one of the items in the toolkits – these are here for you to come back to as and when you need them at certain points during the programme and indeed afterwards.
You need to score at least 70% and to have completed each of the learning nuggets to gain your Systems Innovation certificate....Less
