Introduction to Cost Benefit Analysis for Climate Change Adaptation

Welcome to Introduction to CBA for Climate Change Adaptation!

Cost Benefit Analysis

Urban areas are expected to become even more exposed and vulnerable to flooding and other consequences of climate change in the future. However, cost-effective planning of adaptation strategies is very complicated. Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) is a method that can help decision-makers evaluate adaptation projects and strengthen the basis for making sound investment decisions.

Bridging the gap with this online course

This online course will explain what Cost Benefit Analysis is and how it applies to urban flooding and climate change adaptation. If you are a local government or city official, this will help you identify whether it can be used for your adaptation project.

Introduction to CBA for Climate Change Adaptation

Cost Benefit Analysis can help cities evaluate climate change adaptation measures and this course will introduce you to key concepts to use for your own city’s adaptation project.

Cost Benefit Analysis can help cities evaluate climate change adaptation measures and this course will introduce you to key concepts to use for your own city’s adaptation project. The course explains what Cost Benefit Analysis is and describes its use in urban flooding and climate change adaptation projects. You will also learn about the questions the Cost Benefit Analysis process is designed to answer and other key concepts you need to understand in preparation for carrying out a Cost Benefit Analysis for climate adaptation.

The Introduction to Cost Benefit Analysis for Climate Change Adaptation course is split into four learning nuggets:

  • Course overview
  • Global climate change – impacts and trends
  • Cost benefit analysis of climate change adaptation
  • Summary, review and next steps.

If you are a local government or city official seeking training in urban flooding issues and you need to understand how to carry out a Cost Benefit Analysis for a climate adaptation project, then this course is for you! It will also be of interest to technical staff at water utilities who are involved in decision making on climate adaptation and consultants working in the urban flooding and climate adaptation fields.

If this is you, please enrol to make use of the resource and share the course details with others in your network.

The course pages and learning materials are available in English only.

This course was developed by Climate-KIC, in collaboration with the following partners/organisations who provided the content, expertise and tools on which the course is structured:

  • Describe the impacts of climate change, the main trends and future projections
  • Explain what CBA is and how it applies to urban flooding and climate change adaptation
  • Outline the costs and benefits to include in the CBA process for urban flooding and climate change adaptation projects.

This is one of three Cost Benefit Analysis courses Introduction to Cost Benefit Analysis for Climate Change Adaptation, which explains what Cost Benefit Analysis is and describes its use in urban flooding and climate change projects. Using the Cost Benefit Analysis Climate Adaptation Tool for Adaptation Options, which shows how the Cost Benefit Analysis Climate Adaptation Tool works, step by step, using the real-life example of Odense, Denmark. The Cost Benefit Analysis Climate Adaptation Tool - Tutorial, which provides an opportunity to practice using the Tool, using data from another real-life example (Mumbai, India).

The course is primarily for local government or city officials who need to identify the costs and benefits of climate adaptation projects. However, it will also be of interest to water utilities staff and consultants working in the urban flooding and climate adaptation fields.

The course is free to access.

You are able to enrol on any of the courses and complete them in any order you like. However, we would recommend starting with Course 1 prior to Courses 2-3 and attending any in-person training on the Cost Benefit Analysis Tool. The courses can also be used to enhance in-person training, for example, the Course 3 - Tutorial can be used as a practice exercise during or post in-person training. {slider Is this course available in languages other than English? | icon}At the present time, the course is only available in English.
