Description

Madrid is the capital of Spain and the largest municipality in both the Community of Madrid and Spain as a whole. The city has almost 3.2 million inhabitants and a metropolitan area population of approximately 6.5 million. While Madrid possesses modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Royal Theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro Park, founded in 1631; the 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain's historical archives; a large number of national museums, and the Golden Triangle of Art, located along the Paseo del Prado and comprising three art museums: Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum, a museum of modern art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which completes the shortcomings of the other two museums. Cibeles Palace and Fountain have become one of the monument symbols of the city. Madrid is the most visited city of Spain.

How to get to the course venue - the School of Forestry in Madrid

College of Forestry

Since we all are concerned about sustainability and climate change, we highly recommend using public transportation. Madrid is served by a highly developed and well-maintained transport infrastructure. There are several ways to get to the course venue.

Metro (Subway/Underground Train System)

Metro is the best way to move anywhere in the city. Their website features subway fares, maps, and real-time information about the Metro network. For more information, visit http://www.metromadrid.es/en/
The College of Forestry is served by the Metro station “Vicente Aleixandre” (Line 6, gray color). In order to avoid extra walking time, take the exit “Gregorio del Amo” on you way out to the street.

Bus

There is a shuttle bus service, offered by EMT (the city’s public bus company), that connects the Airport to downtown Madrid. You can either stop in the Atocha train station bus stop, or in Cibeles Square. You will have to commute to another bus, Metro, or Taxi to get to the College of Forestry. College of Forestry is served by bus lines 132 and F. For more information about the shuttle bus service and fares, visit: https://www.emtmadrid.es/Bloques-EMT/Aeropuerto.aspx?lang=en-GB

TAXI

Madrid is a very busy city, and traffic jams are very frequent. Taxi may be a good option to move around at nighttime when the Metro network shuts down and the bus frequency slows down. If you choose to take a taxi from/to the airport to your hotel or to the course venue, there is a €30.00 fixed rate, no matter the distance. For further information about taxi fares, visit: https://www.esmadrid.com/en/madrid-taxi

Background

Ecosystems and biodiversity provide a wide range of services through their bio-geo-chemical processes that are critical for sustenance of humans. Ecosystem services are defined as services provided by the natural environment that benefit people. The unique feature of most of the services emanating from ecosystems is that, although acknowledged by people, they are unaccounted, unpriced and therefore remain outside the domain of the market. The approach of this course is to engage people into the development of initiatives based on the sustainable use of forest and natural products and services, as a way to combat climate change.
