Transformational Leadership From Within: A model for moving sustainability beyond incremental change

THE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE
Helping an organization to better address its sustainability is a highly complex matter. Most leaders tasked with this job, recognize the urgency but are frustrated with the limited support they receive and how challenging it is to prove sustainability’s importance. While there is lots of progress to report, the reality is that organisations aren’t advancing nearly fast enough to meet most local, national or global climate change targets.
OUR EFFORTS ARE NOT WORKING
The most popular mainstream sustainability solutions define the indicators that need to be managed and rate how well organizations perform. This has led organizations to focus on efficiently securing a high rating and promoted mainly incremental progress, rather than the deeply rooted change becoming truly sustainable will demand.
In most cases sustainability is not considered a key priority or important to the organization’s success. Without demonstrating sustainability can significantly strengthen the bottom line and evoking transformational change, progress will remain frustratingly slow. Elevating how we pursue organizational sustainability will call for a new kind of leadership.
THE NEED FOR A NEW LEADERSHIP PARADIGM
To lead organizational transformational, a distinct shift in how we understand the challenge at hand is absolutely necessary. Further, we need to begin addressing the true complexity of the system an organization is part of; this includes collaboratively leading as well as enabling and supporting both internal and external stakeholders. Transformation will also demand that the same business discipline is applied to pursuing sustainability that is applied within any other area of operations. These imperatives will require leaders to evolve perspective, acquire new knowledge and skills and employ a broader set of tools; it is this need that the Transformational Leadership Workshop was designed to meet.
